Marcia Gay Harden, born 14 August 1959 in San Diego, California, was the daughter of Beverly who was a housewife, and Thad an US Navy officer. She is the mother of one brother and three sisters. Her father was a diplomat and the family moved frequently. They lived in numerous countries across the globe including Germany, Japan, Greece and Germany. Harden was a student at Surrattsville high school in Clinton, Maryland after she decided to settle down. In 1980, Harden attended the University of Texas at Austin and earned a bachelor's in theatre. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988, in order to complete her MFA.
